Meridian rests on a simple, well-studied idea: the signals of a life move together, and seeing them together changes what you can understand. This page holds the research behind that idea, and the rules we follow whenever we use it.

The evidence

Each layer of the idea is peer-reviewed.

Three claims sit under Meridian: your life is fragmented across apps, your body and mood move together, and seeing yourself clearly changes how you feel. Each one rests on published research. The numbered sources are listed in full at the bottom of this page.

The fragmentation is real

Human-computer interaction research finds that no single app can hold the varied goals people track, so they scatter across ecosystems of tools, and stitching that data back together is named as a distinct, unsolved stage of self-tracking.

Your body speaks for your mind

Inferring emotional and mental states from multimodal signals like sleep, activity, and heart-rate variability is an established field. Systematic reviews of dozens of studies, and clinical work in npj Digital Medicine, show the body-to-emotion link Meridian reads is well documented, including recent longitudinal work that anticipated mood shifts from wearable sleep and circadian patterns in a clinical study.

The patterns cross domains

The link at the heart of Meridian, that you feel low when you don't sleep, is supported by daily-diary studies, including work in adolescents, showing sleep and mood move together, each shaping the next day. Experimental sleep research points the same way: a night of lost sleep is linked to higher next-day anxiety, and sleep loss can deepen social withdrawal and loneliness. A single-domain app cannot see connections like these.

Seeing yourself clearly matters

A clear, stable sense of self is associated with higher wellbeing, and the wider self-concept literature links it to lower depression and anxiety. Neuroscience adds a mechanism: putting feelings into words engages the brain's regulation circuitry and is linked to a quieter threat response. Early AI-reflection tools point the same way, and the field is still young. That is the space Meridian is built for.

The whole picture

What shapes a life doesn't live in one app.

Some of the strongest findings in wellbeing research come from parts of life no single tracker watches: the people around you, the sense of purpose you carry, the way you move, the places you spend time. Each finding below describes an association observed across large groups, not a promise about any one person, and each lives in a different domain. Seeing them together is the whole point.

Connection

Across 148 studies and 308,849 people, stronger social relationships were associated with roughly 50% higher odds of survival, an influence comparable to well-established mortality risk factors. A 2023 synthesis of 90 cohort studies found social isolation and loneliness each associated with higher mortality. 11, 17

Focus

In a cohort of 6,985 US adults over 50, a stronger sense of life purpose was associated with lower all-cause mortality. 12

Energy

Across 1.2 million people, those who exercised reported about 1.5 fewer poor-mental-health days per month than those who didn't. A 2022 dose-response meta-analysis links even modest activity to lower depression risk, and genetic-causal evidence points the same direction. 13, 18, 19

Calm

A 2023 meta-analysis found green-space exposure associated with lower depression and anxiety. In a controlled experiment, a nature walk reduced rumination where a matched city walk did not. 14, 20

The research doesn't stay on this page. It travels with every insight Meridian shows you, so you can always check the ground it stands on.

Every pattern explains itself

When Meridian shows you a pattern, it carries a short, plain-language note on why that connection might exist, with a link to learn more. Those notes cite verified, peer-reviewed research, graded for how strong the evidence is, and every link is checked by hand before it ships.

Careful language, by design

Meridian says "tends to" and "often lines up with", never "causes". Patterns in your data are observations, and the app tells you how firm each one is rather than dressing a correlation up as a law.

Published ranges or nothing

Where Meridian reads a body signal against a population range, it uses only published clinical references, like the American Heart Association's resting heart rate band. Where no accepted range exists, Meridian shows nothing rather than inventing one.

Your patterns, not the average's

Research describes populations; you are a sample of one. Meridian's insights come from your own data over time, with the published science as context, not the other way around.

A first gentle practice

Meridian's guided breathing break follows the same rules as every insight. Slow, even breathing is associated in a systematic review with the body's rest-and-recover response, and a month-long randomized study found that a few minutes of daily breathing practice modestly improved mood in healthy adults. The app promises presence, never outcomes: a session is one more observation the mirror can read, not a treatment. 32, 33
